ACTIVITY
A lot of public works aiming at the improvement of residents and visitors standards of living have been realised in the island. Heliport, Basketball and Volley courts, electrification of all settlements, telephone network in all the island, networks of water supply, opening ups and asphalting streets, conservation and manning of historical Lighthouse "Apolytaras", realisation of cultural events, financing of archaeological excavations, improvement of coastal transport, are works and activities that have been realised from 1998 until today.
The aim of all Community activities was, and also remains, the interception of the desolation course of the island by the arrival, if it is possible, of new residents.
The Community of Antikythera makes during the last years a big effort for the rescue of archaeological monuments of island. Thus the last years at the months of August and September a large archaeological mission of the Ministry of Culture realises excavations. The visitor of the island can in deed be guided by the archaeologists. The archaelogist Aris Tsaravopoulos ( 26nd Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities resides in Piraeus ) is responsible for the archaeological work in Kythera and Antikythera.
Another activity that the Community promotes and supports is about the ornithology. The island is the center of attention for the Greek Ornithological Company, which has changed the old primary School into the first in Greece Ornithological Station, aiming at the study of roughly 250 species of birds that have been recorded in the Antikythera and the around islands.
It is worths the note that the permanent population of Antikythera cannot exceed the 45 individuals at the period of winter, however on summertime and mainly at the feast day of Patron Saint Myron (16&17 August) the population can exceed also the 1000 individuals. In the abroad ( Australia , America e.t.c.) Antikytherians constitute many communities keeping tight bonds with the island.
The Community of Antikythera and the Community of Agkistri are the unique Communities of Prefecture Piraeus, that did not suffer administrative change with the Law “Kapodistrias”.
