Archaeological Museum of Kythera

The museum was constructed in 1911 in order to shelter the Kytherian Association. In 1979 the Kytherian Association gave away the building to the Greek State in order to house the museum. Samples of prehistoric vessels of the Minoan and Mycenaean period mainly from Paleopoli, marmoreal sculptures, ceramic, inscriptions, currencies, are what you will see in the museum. The archaic lion of Kythera is one of the most important exhibits. Due to lack of space many of the discoveries, are found either stored or exposed in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. Unfortunately Kythera doesn't have a museum worthy of its history.

Byzantine Museum

It houses the collection of Byzantine and Post Byzantine art. It is accommodated in the Post Byzantine church of the Ascension at Livadi. The items of the collection have been granted by the Holy Metropolis of Kythera. There are murals(hagiographies) from the old Early Christianic years to the Post Byzantine, works of religious painting and objects of the religious ritual.

The work of collection, maintenance and protection of this work is thanks to the 1st Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. In the hall you will also see fragments of an important Earth Christianic floor mosaic detached from the destroyed temple of Saint Ioannis in Potamos, in affinity with the wall-removed murals from the arch hemi-cylinder.
